Photoshop CC18 has an option called Select Subject. If your background is multiple colors, you can select the subject of your image instead of the background.

You will be given the option to give your duplicated layer a custom name. Duplicate the Background layer by clicking Layer > Duplicate Layer. Make sure the Background layer is highlighted.
